10 Biggest Pickup Truck Stories of the Year: 2020 Toyota Tundra Freezes Out Chevy, Ford, Ram Trucks
The year of our Lord 2019 was a big one for big trucks, as pretty much all of the Detroit Three’s heavy-duty haulers were either redesigned, refreshed or at least meaningfully updated for the 2020 model year — but ’twas a mere full-size Toyota truck that anno dominated reader interest on Cars.com sister site PickupTrucks.com. Yes, the 2020 Toyota Tundra lorded over all others, ascending to the No. 1 spot on our year-end top 10 — on which it also takes up two other positions.

Who woulda thunk that a very mild refresh of this long-languishing generation of the truck could spark so much interest among prospective pickup buyers? I’m not sayin’ this version of the Tundra is old, but when we recently heard about the new Tundra 1794 edition, we assumed that was a reference to the year it was last redesigned (rimshot!). Be that as it may, readers still warmed to the Tundra last year, with our preview of the 2020 updates, new-model-year pricing and our editors’ recommendations for five ways they’d like to see the pickup improve in future iterations coming at Nos. 1, 6 and 10 among our top-ranking articles in all of 2019.
Heavy-duty trucks did get some love from readers, however, with our on-the-road testing to determine the real-world fuel economy of the 2019 Ford Super Duty F-250 landing in the No. 2 spot, and our Monster V-8 Showdown pitting the 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 2500/3500 against the 2019 Ram 2500/3500, in fourth place.
Rounding out the 2019 top five were our breakdown of the 2019 Ford F-150’s towing capacities and our explainer on the differences between the Ram Mega Cab and crew-cab configurations, at Nos. 3 and 5, respectively.
The 2020 Toyota Tacoma makes an appearance on the second half of the roster, along with more Ram news and our eulogy for the manual transmission in full-size trucks, so keep on and, as Michael Jackson once said, “don’t stop ’til you get enough.” And as we near the end of the first month of a new decade, join us in bidding adieu to the year that was 2019.
