Corvette may be spun off as standalone brand – report
General Motors (GM) may be looking to leverage on the Corvette brand by having it as a standalone outfit, citing greater profit as the main driver for the move. AutoWeek reports that the new brand would eventually include a sedan and an SUV or crossover, GM insiders revealed, and there will also be a second Corvette-based Cadillac sports car.
At the unveiling of the C8 Corvette Stingray, company president Mark Reuss and VP of performance vehicles and motorsports Jim Campbell, wouldn’t reveal either plans. “I can’t say anything one way or the other,” Campbell said.
Such a move isn’t new in the industry. Seat pulled the same with its performance Cupra line, Hyundai with the Genesis, Dodge created a Ram Truck brand, and Ford is developing a Mustang-badged crossover. Today, the Corvette name remains one of Chevrolet’s most valuable properties, and for the first time the midship sports car will be offered as a right-hand drive model. It certainly is not a coincidence, then.
As for the Corvette-based Cadillac, it won’t be the first either. The previous Cadillac XLR (pictured above) was built on the bones of the C6 Corvette’s chassis, and featured Cadillac’s LH2 Northstar 4.6 litre V8 engine producing 320 hp and 420 Nm of torque.
Both the Corvette brand and the Cadillac C8 are still in the planning stages, according to GM insiders, although it’s unclear if both plans will eventually be realised. Would you fancy a Corvette SUV, dear readers?
