Street Rod of the Year was a no-brainer. Other outlets had their own similar “best of” awards, like Motor Trend‘s Car of the Year, Time‘s Person of the Year, and who could forget Playboy‘s Playmate of the Year. So, of course, Street Rodder needed an annual award to honor the staff’s favorite ride from the previous 12 months.
In 1995, Street Rodder took that idea and expanded it into the Top 100 program. Every year for the past 25 years, we’ve been attending 10 well-known car shows and selecting 10 outstanding cars at each one. We finish the year with 100 amazing cars as our annual Top 100 (see links above).
After that, we have one final decision to make: choosing which one will be the Street Rod of the Year.
Our winner for 2019 is extraordinary and surprising, and we can’t wait to reveal it. But before we do, we want to show you the 10 outstanding runners-up. Five are featured right here. Tomorrow, the other five will be posted in Part 2 of this story. Finally, we will announce the 2019 Street Rodder Street Rod of the Year.
1931 Ford Model A Coupe / Mike Collman / Portland, OR
Mike Collman’s ice blue Model A was selected from the Suede Palace at the Grand National Roadster Show. The chopped and channeled coupe is further modified with suicide doors and classic pinstripes. Rocket Racing drag-style wheels mounted with Firestone piecrust whitewalls in front and and Radir cheater slicks in back are additional 1960s show-rod influences, which continue in the engine compartment. The 322ci Buick Nailhead runs six 97s and Offenhauser valve covers. A Schroder Sprint Car wheel, 1951 Ford gauges, mirrored dash, and diamond-tuck upholstery set off the interior.
1936 Ford Roadster / George Poteet / Collierville, TN
One month after earning the America’s Most Beautiful Roadster Award at the 2019 Grand National Roadster Show, George Poteet’s “Three Penny Roadster” had a prominent spot at the Detroit Autorama, winning a Street Rodder Top 100 prize there. Built by Eric Perratt at Pinkee’s Rod Shop in Windsor, Colorado, the roadster is modified with a stretched wheelbase, chopped top, reshaped fenders, and fabricated hood, doors, and decklidâplus many other mods. The dressed up 351 Windsor engine is topped by 8-stack EFI and backed by a TKO 5-speed trans and Winters quick-change rear.
The Pallas’ resto-rod Olds was one of Street Rodder‘s Top 100 selections from the Grand National Roadster Show. Originally purchased new by Rodney’s grandmother Silvia, and recreated by Scott Laitinen and the buillders at SIC Chops in Lake Havasu City, Arizona, the Dove Gray coupe retains much of the factory trim. The rest is updated, including the Roadster Shop chassis and 18- and 19-inch Colorado Custom wheels, accessorized with nostalgic 1950-1953 Olds-style hubcaps. Nostalgia extends to the LS3, disguised with Olds Rocket valve covers, appropriate green paint, and an oil-bath air cleaner.
1932 Ford Sedan / Bill Cromling / Grafton, Ohio
Almost 13,000 cars showed up at the 50th NSRA Street Rod Nationals in Louisville, including this jet-black Deuce Fordor, created for Bill Cromling by Danny Tesar and Larry Brunkala at Precision Hot Rods and Fabrication in Macedonia, Ohio. The Precision custom chassis carries the full-fender sedan body, set off by PPG paint and complemented by olive artillery wheels with Ford V-8 caps. Rich brown tuck ‘n’ roll leather covers the bench seats. The 383 Chevy engine retains a traditional look, with a pinstriped Cadillac-style air cleaner hiding the FAST fuel-injection setup.
1930 Ford Model A Coupe / Peter Georgeades / Newark, California
Peter Georgeades is a young man with a love for 1960s-style show rods, as proven by his Model A, chosen at the Grand National Roadster Show. Body mods include a 4-inch chop, bobbed rearend, and raised wheelwells, finished with candy red panel paint. Wheelsmith chrome reverse wheels are wrapped in bias-ply skinnies and grooved slicks. A Pinkee’s Rod Shop chassis carries the coupe. The 383 stroker Chevy small-block is topped by a 6-71 supercharger and three Rochester carburetors. The interior includes handmade race bucket seats. Cambra Speed Shop in Orange, California, built the car.
