Gran Turismo 7 Trailer Released, Launch Date Announced

Mark your calendars for March 4, 2022. That’s when the latest installment in Polyphony Digital’s iconic franchise, Gran Turismo 7, will become available for both Playstation 4 and 5. Frankly, it looks incredible, offering the sort of expansive and immersive car enthusiast experience that the franchise is known for—but, tellingly, the most recent release, Gran Turismo Sport, essentially abandoned.

So consider this a return to form. All the things that made the previous things great, like a massive selection of cars, and emphasis on collecting said cars and modifying them, and a robust single-player career mode. Whereas Sport was focused, almost to a fault, on a competitive online driving experience, GT7 appears to be pure GT fanservice—to its everlasting benefit.

We get a peek at GT7’s most important elements, like the livery editor, the “Scapes” photo mode, the all-important “GT Auto” tuning mode, and some interesting new features like “GT Cafe.” The latter is very intriguing, apparently using NPCs to prompt (and assist) players in acquiring certain types of cars, generally fitting a specific type; say, Japanese Compact Cars, as the screenshot included in the release says, with rewards for completing the “menu.”

But it’s the racing that’s the soul of the game, and it looks like Polyphony Digital is wringing some serious graphic juice out of the PS5 hardware it’s showing the game off with. More robust weather and time-of-day effects add to the realism, particularly on old favorite tracks like High Speed Ring and Trial Mountain. Watch the trailer above for yourself and see. We recommend a big screen, a good sound system, and the patience you’ll need to wait until March to load this game on your machine.
