Hot Rod Power Tour 2019 Day 3 Load In
Presented by Chevrolet Performance and Driven by Continental Tire
Today was a foggy and ominous drive through the lush, green American South. The cars shook off the beads of water with a meandering drive through twisty roads between Martinsville and Bristol Motor Speedway. The little paint remaining on 100-year-old, abandoned buildings was shaken loose as cars rumbled by, following the day’s route from the oldest NASCAR track to one of the most action packed.
The tight oval at Bristol Motor Speedway is a half-mile of bumping and rubbing only in which some drivers triumphed. Recently retired NASCAR broadcaster Darrell Waltrip stacked up 12 wins here in his career, and like Waltrip, drivers that aren’t afraid to get a little dirty and who race smart success here. The drag strip is also home to the NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals on Father’s Day weekend, just after Power Tour Rolls through. The cacophony thoroughbred quarter-mile machines echo off the green hills surrounding the track.
The special treat of the day was select participants taking parade laps around “The Last Great Colosseum” in their own cars. Seeing wagons, trucks, hot rods, imports, muscle cars and late models take the over 24-degree banks was epic. Lead by a pace car and chased by a Sheriff. Itching to flex their right feet, some of the drivers hung back in the pack and stood on the gas down front and back straightaways. Some intermittent rain rounded out the first run group, but umbrellas popped open and the fun carried on.
