‘Hugely important’: Disability rights groups back EV car charging accessibility standards

Disabled Motoring UK (DMUK) are one of the stakeholders in the process of creating guidance to identify which EV chargers are suitable for drivers’ needs. The Department for Transport and another disability charity, Motability, have commissioned the British Standards Institution to create the guidance.

This framework will define electric vehicle charging points as ‘fully accessible’, ‘partially accessible’ and ‘not accessible’. 

Graham Footer, the Chief Executive of DMUK, commented on the impending changes, saying he hopes the government will represent the interests of DMUK and its members.

Speaking to Express.co.uk, he said: “I think it is hugely important that the government develops EV accessibility standards and the sooner this work is completed the better.

“It is very important that a set of accessible EV standards are produced so the EV infrastructure industry has a set of standards to work to.

“I think it is incredibly important that a set of EV accessibility standards are created and not shoehorn the standards into something that already exists.”

Graham Footer continued by saying: “The standards need to cover all aspects of EV infrastructure including what an accessible chargepoint looks like, the EV charging bay dimensions, signage, payment methods, locations and information services in case of an emergency.”

The government is aiming to provide the industry with guidance on how to make individual charging points more accessible by summer 2022.

Consistent standards are required to ensure that everyone can make use of the UK’s network of electric charging points.

Rachel Maclean, the Minister for Transport, lauded the government’s progress towards a net zero future.

She said: “We are taking action to provide accessibility guidance to both operators and drivers to make sure that the transition to zero-emission driving will benefit everyone in society as we build back better. 

“I want to make it as easy as possible for EV drivers to charge up their vehicles at public charge points right across the UK, regardless of their mobility.”

The Office for Zero Emission Vehicles (OZEV), Motability and BSI will be working with industry stakeholders including EV chargepoint operators, disability charities and innovators.
