The companies have been hit with charges after failing to follow confusing rules around loading and unloading goods. Businesses are able to load and unload before 10:30 am and after 4:30 pm on the busy Newmarket Street.

However, business owners on the High Street are only able to load or unload goods for up to 30 minutes at each time.

Businesses are only able to unload at the “parking attendants discretion” leaving many baffled over the rules.

Jim McSherry, spokesman for the Wee Windaes pub in Ayr said the policy was “not fair” for businesses.

He told the Daily Record: “Parking attendants are terrorising the town.

“They booked me last week at 10.10 am and that’s twice the same warden has booked me.

“We’re not parking here – we’re loading and unloading because we’re businesses but it appears you need to have a permit.

“The town is dying on its feet and they’re doing this, booking businesses.

“Everyone just ends up paying it but it’s not fair, especially when we’re trying to trade and provide services for people in the town.

“It’s common sense when people are parked outside their businesses, it’s the only way they can operate.”

Zoe Hunter, co-owner of food business They Bake has also been hit with penalties for unloading stock.

She said they had asked how to get a permit but the attendant did not help.

Ms Hunter said businesses have been “a bit shocked” because many had suddenly started receiving tickets.
