Power, Trim Details Emerge for 2021 Buick Envision

When we last wrote about the redesigned 2021 Buick Envision, a few things remained unknown. We’d seen the lower, longer styling of the SUV that slots in the middle of Buick’s lineup, and we saw its more upscale interior, as well. We knew that switching to a new platform meant it carried a new suspension and dimensions, and that it would now be powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and nine-speed automatic transmission. We didn’t know how much power it would put out or what fuel economy that would bring. Buick also told us there would be a new range-topping trim level, the Envision Avenir, but it didn’t say exactly what would make it special.

Now, with vehicles heading to showrooms, Buick has given full details and pricing for the new model.

New Power, Gas Mileage

First, the power. The new Envision will come with just one powertrain, a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder that pumps out 228 horsepower and 258 pounds-feet of torque. The new engine is mated to a nine-speed automatic that routes power through the front wheels, with twin-clutch all-wheel drive as optional. The old 2.5-liter four-cylinder and six-speed automatic are gone.

The EPA rates the new model to get 24/31/26 mpg city/highway/combined for the front-wheel drive model and 22/29/25 mpg for the all-wheel drive variant. For the FWD model, that’s a nice bump from the 22/29/25 mpg with the 2.5-liter 2020 Envision; for the AWD model, it’s a significant jump over the 20/25/22 mpg seen in the prior turbo 2.0-liter 2020 model.

New Trim

Topping the Envision lineup is the new Avenir trim level, which will debut for the first time on Buick’s smaller mid-size SUV. It comes with a unique mesh grille design that emulates the look on other Avenir vehicles, such as the Enclave SUV. The Envision Avenir also gets tinted dark-chrome trim and unique 20-inch wheels with Pearl Nickel paint. The list of standard features grows to include heated and ventilated front seats, diamond-quilted leather with perforations, a driver-seat massage feature, heated rear seats, navigation system and wireless smartphone charging. Buick is also making adaptive shock absorbers optional on the Avenir.

New Price

The 2021 Envision is slated to start at $32,995, including destination fee, for a base trim, called Preferred, with FWD (AWD adds $1,800 to all models). Stepping up to the next level is the Essence trim, with additional standard features, for $36,995. The top Avenir trim will come in at $43,195. New 2021 model-year Envisions are starting to trickle into dealerships nationwide right now, but supply remains limited, according to Buick executives.
