Shell converts Fulham fuel station into EV charging hub

Petrol and diesel pumps removed and replaced with ultra-rapid EV charging points

Shell has converted one of its fuel stations in Fulham into an EV charging hub, replacing the petrol and diesel pumps with ultra-rapid chargers.

The new Shell Recharge Fulham site caters solely for fully electric cars. There are nine 175kW charge points, which can charge the most advanced EVs currently on the market from 0 per cent to 80 per cent battery in 10 minutes, three times faster than a more common 50kW rapid charger.

The chargers run on 100 per cent renewable energy, while the forecourt itself is covered by a timber canopy with built-in solar panels. There’s also a shop, along with a seating area and cafe.

Shell has previously announced plans to install 50,000 on-street chargers by 2025 through its subsidiary Ubitricity, and aims to put 800 EV points in car parks at around 100 branches of Waitrose in the same period.

István Kapitany, Shell’s global executive vice-president for mobility, said: “EV drivers are looking for a charging experience that is as fast, convenient and comfortable as possible. This is exactly what Shell Fulham aims to offer.”

Kapitany added that the new hub “gives us all a glimpse into the future of mobility”.

Transport Minister Trudy Harrison said: “It’s fantastic to see Shell leading the way with its brand-new charging hub, offering EV drivers an easy and rapid charging experience.

“With more people making the switch to EVs than ever before, this is exactly the type of facility we need to help make the transition as simple as possible for drivers up and down the country.”
