The 2019 Holley National Hot Rod Reunion is All Things Nostalgia
The Holley National Hot Rod Reunion, organized by the NHRA Motorsports Museum and presented by AAA Insurance, offers a look back at the cars and personalities that paved the way for modern-day drag racers. The real beauty of the Hot Rod Reunion is the diversity in the racing divisions, as hundreds of race cars battle it out in more than a dozen classes at Beech Bend Raceway Park in Bowling Green, Kentucky. If you like gassers, there were three classes devoted strictly to them: Straight Axle, Geezer Gassers, and AA/Gas. Other classes, such as Hot Rod Eliminator, allowed all types of cars to compete, while classes like Nostalgia Super Stock were geared toward mid-’60s muscle cars. There were multiple classes for dragsters, altereds, and Funny Cars, including Nostalgia Top Fuel, Competition Eliminator, and more.
In addition to the drag racing action, the event featured the Axalta Show ’N Shine, a collection of more than 1,000 hot rods, customs, muscle cars, and classic trucks. The Beech Bend facility features rolling hills and lots of shade trees, making it the perfect place to hang out for the weekend. For the purists, the Memory Lane exhibit showcases historic drag cars on static display, while the more active historic cars are displayed in a special section of the pits. The event culminated on Saturday night with the Cacklefest, a nighttime celebration of nitro-burning drag cars attacking the senses.
This year’s Hot Rod Reunion will go down in history as “the one time it wasn’t hot.” Temperatures are often in the 90s, with high humidity, but this, year Bowling Green was unseasonably cool. The great weather and awesome action resulted in a packed house on Father’s Day weekend.
Take a look at some of the highlights from this year’s Hot Rod Reunion and put it on your calendar for next year. Greg Sharp, Larry Fisher, and the folks at the NHRA Motorsports Museum can’t guarantee a repeat of the glorious weather, but they can promise another fun-filled celebration of hot rod and drag race history June 18-20, 2020.
