Renault May Close the Factory That Builds the Alpine A110

Renault May Close Alpine Factory

French automaker Renault needs to reduce fixed costs by €2 billion, and that means the best sports car not sold in America may be in trouble. Autocar has a sum-up of French media reports indicating that Renault is looking to close four factories, including the Dieppe factory where the A110 is built. That factory was upgraded in 2017 to produce the A110, and it’s one of the smallest owned by Renault. Autocar notes that demand for the new A110 has taken a nosedive—just 61 were registered across Europe in February. It’s the classic sports-car problem—everyone who wants one buys one at launch, and then demand tapers significantly.

So the A110’s future is unclear. As are other Renault models, including the iconic Megane hatchback. But, Renault has also secured a €5 billion loan from the French government, so maybe that’ll help save these models.

2021 Monaco Grand Prix and Indy 500 Won’t Fall On the Same Date

Typically, America’s greatest race and the jewel of the F1 calendar fall on the same late May date, but that won’t be the case in 2021. Racer reports that the Automobile Club de Monaco confirmed next year’s Grand Prix will be held on May 23rd. The 500 will run a week later, on the 30th. It’s the first time the dates haven’t clashed since 2005. In theory, this means a driver could run both races, but it would be extremely difficult, given the monthlong commitment the 500 requires. Here’s hoping, though.
