The 2021 BMW M5 Competition Is Here With a New Face and a Retuned Suspension

Following the release of the newly refreshed 2021 5-Series, BMW has followed up with an updated M5, complete with the same cosmetic improvements and a host of other small upgrades. The 2021 M5 gets a bigger grille with slimmer, sharper headlights, and a newly retuned suspension for the Competition model.

Like the normal 5-Series, the 2021 BMW M5 gets a reworked fascia to align itself with the rest of the company’s corporate lineup, meaning two L-shaped daytime running lights and a set of enlarged kidney grilles with, in the M5’s case, blacked-out M-specific double vertical bars. The rear bumper and taillights have also been retouched for a sleeker look.

Performance from the S63 4.4-liter twin-turbo V-8 remains unchanged for 2021, with 600 horsepower and 553 lb-ft of torque from the base model and 617 horsepower and 553 lb-ft of torque if you upgrade to the Competition. The base car is able to accelerate to 60 mph in just 3.2 seconds, while the Competition can pull off the sprint in just 3.1. Top speed for both cars is limited to 155 mph, though if you spec the M Driver’s package, it jumps to 190 mph. Power still gets to all four wheels via an eight-speed torque-converter automatic transmission and a trick xDrive system with a full rear-wheel-drive mode.

Though power is unchanged, the M5 Competition gets a couple of performance improvements for 2021, including a new “Track” drive mode and a retuned suspension with new shock absorbers and updated damper controls. All M5s get a larger 12.3-inch infotainment display, as well as wireless Android Auto and Apply CarPlay. There’s also a handful of new colors available, including Brands Hatch Grey, Motegi Red metallic, Tanzanite Blue II metallic, Aventurine Red II metallic, and a Frozen Bluestone metallic matte finish.

The 2021 M5 will have a starting MSRP of $103,500 plus a $995 destination fee when it goes on sale in August 2020.
