The 2021 Volkswagen Arteon Gets a New Face, But No R Model or Shooting Brake for the U.S.
After numerous rumors, leaks, and spy shots, Volkswagen has finally unveiled its newly refreshed Arteon liftback sedan for 2021. The new Arteon gets a sleeker fascia and an update interior in the U.S., but unlike Europe, doesn’t get a new shooting brake body style or R performance trim.
For 2021, VW has given the Arteon a new grille that’s even prettier than before, with chrome bars and a color-matching front apron. On upper trim levels, there’s also an illuminated central bar that connects the two daytime running lights. The new shape, Volkswagen says, generates a drag coefficient of just 0.265.
Inside, the entire dash panel has been refreshed with a new look and better materials. There’s also a new multi-function steering wheel that’s able to detect how many hands are on the wheel at a time. VW has made its digital cockpit, which includes a fully digital 10.25-inch gauge cluster display, standard across the Arteon range. It’s paired to an 8.0-inch center infotainment screen with things like voice control, multi-phone pairing, and wireless charging.
What hasn’t changed for 2021 is the drivetrain. Buyers still only have one choice of engine-transmission combo: a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four making 268 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque, sending power to the wheels via an eight speed automatic transmission. All-wheel-drive is optional in the mid-range SEL R-Line trim, and standard on the SEL Premium R-Line. Buyers of the base SE Arteon will have to settle for front-wheel drive only.
In Europe, the 2021 Arteon gets a new shooting brake body style, as well as a performance oriented Arteon R trim with 315 horsepower, 310 lb-ft of torque, standard AWD, and a new “R-Performance Torque Vectoring” system that’s able to distribute torque variably between the axles and the rear wheels. Sadly, it seems as if neither of these variants will make their way Stateside.
Volkswagen has yet to release pricing for the 2021 Arteon, though we expect it to start at around $38,000. Deliveries should begin by the end of the year.
