2019 Empire Hill Climb driver profile: 2018 champion Daniel Milewski
Daniel Milewski is bringing his 2002 Chevrolet Corvette back to defend his title at the Empire Hill Climb.
We’re less than one month from the 2019 Empire Hill Climb presented by Autoweek in beautiful Empire, Michigan, and we figure it’s never too early to start talking about the cars and hill climbers who will be taking on the Detroit Region SCCA-sanctioned event this year.
Over the next four weeks, we plan to feature several of the 40 drivers who primed to take on the Empire Hill Climb. The idea is to show would-be hill climbers around the country that, yes, this could be you. Hill climbs are just one way to enjoy car culture — and maybe make a few friends along the way.
To kick things off, here’s a look at two-time winner of the Empire Hill Climb, Daniel Milewski.
Residence: Brighton, Michigan
Car: 2002 Chevrolet Corvette Z06
AW: How long have you had the car, and where did you get it?
Daniel Milewski: I bought the car as a street car back in 2015, did a few track days and got hooked on racing.
Daniel Milewski also competes in SCCA road racing events.
AW: Any previous Empire Hill Climb experience?
DM: 2017, 2018
AW: Do you compete with this car in any other events?
DM: SCCA Club Racing, road racing
AW: Why did you choose to race the Empire Hill Climb?
DM: Empire is an awesome way to close out the season and hang out with friends while still enjoying our car hobby.
AW: What makes the Empire Hill Climb special?
DM: The atmosphere. It’s such a welcoming place, and everyone you meet treats you like family.
AW: Favorite Empire Hill Climb moment?
DM: Getting to the top of the hill and feeling like you almost hit half the trees on the way up. Then, you take your helmet off and talk to the people in your run group, and you’re comforted by them saying they also almost hit half the trees. It’s a real thrill. You’re doing north of 100 mph on a seasonal road that I think is posted at 25 mph speed limit.
AW: What got you into racing?
DM: “Fast and Furious,” no joke.
