Bugatti Bolide Concept Is a 1,825 BHP, 310 MPH+ Track Attacking Machine
Bugatti has built its fastest, most powerful, and lightest car to date — the Bolide. Packing a quad-turbocharged eight-liter W16 engine that produces 1,825 BHP and the same in torque, it weighs just 1,240kg which gives it a power-to-weight ratio of 0.67 kg per HP, meaning it’s got the power of a hypercar in the body that is no heavier than your average supermini.
The Bolide’s figures are on par with Formula 1 cars and will continue onto a top speed that’s well above 500 km/h (approximately 310 MPH). Combined, the new concept will lap the 12.8-mile Nurburgring Nordschleife circuit in just 5:23.1 minutes — not the fastest time in automotive history (that belongs to the Porsche 919 Hybrid Evo), but still incredibly impressive.
Stephan Winkelmann, the president of Bugatti, said in a press release that the Bolide is, “An uncompromising experiment, a thoroughbred, a Pur Sang that, in its brute exclusivity, impresses above all with high performance, low weight, and a driving experience in a whole new dimension. Driving the Bolide is like riding on a cannonball.”
Bugatti achieves such feats by using a host of new components and technology, as well as by making the Bolide incredible aerodynamic. It features redesigned turbos that utilize optimized blades in order to build up more boost pressure and power at higher engine speeds, as well as a lightweight powertrain and reconfigured dry-sump lubrication.
Air-to-air intercooling with water pre-cooling keeps temperatures down, while carbon-titanium radial turbofan compressors have been implemented to keep the brakes cool too. All of this is housed in a carbon-fiber monocoque that is super-light and super-stiff, and can only be equated to the quality that’s used in the aerospace industry.
