Skoda confirms affordable EV for India; to be priced under Rs 20 lakh
Skoda could employ the front-wheel drive MEB21F platform for its affordable EV.
Skoda plans to introduce an affordable electric car in the Indian market. It is expected to be offered in an SUV body style with a target price of under Rs 20 lakh.
Martin Jahn, Board Member for Sales and Marketing at Skoda Auto, said, “We have to come to India with an entry BEV. We will now be bringing Enyaq, which is a premium car, but an entry BEV or more affordable BEV than Enyaq, it is a necessity for us in India.”
“For the entry EVโs architecture, we are exploring possibilities; it could be either MEB adjusted or it could be in cooperation with another partner. As such, it would have to be somewhere between โฌ15,000 to โฌ20,000”, Jahn added.
Skoda is yet to finalize the platform for its entry-level EV and is in talks with potential partners, including Mahindra. There have been reports suggesting that the two brands could jointly develop a budget EV based on the MEB21G architecture.
However, as per the latest report, Skoda could employ the front-wheel drive MEB21F platform for its affordable EV. It is said to be cheaper to produce and has shorter wiring harnesses and more effective cooling loops. It can support 50 kWh and higher battery capacities.
While the exact timeline for the launch of Skoda’s affordable EV is not known, reports indicate that it would take at least 2-3 years before the EV hits the market.
