This 1959 BMW 507 Series II Roadster Is Expected To Sell for $2 Million USD

Automotive collectors will be thrilled with the announcement of a limited production 1959 BMW 507 Series II Roadster hitting the auction block on January 21, 2021 at Bonhams Scottsdale Auction.

The 507 was originally designed to rival fellow European car company, Mercedes and its 300SL. The make of the car was designed for and aimed at the American market. Thought entirely styled by New York-based, German ex-patriot Count Albrecht von Goertz, the car still maintains its distinctive European allure. This was the first time the prestigious design icon stylized an entire car, and the last time the Count partnered with BMW until the 1980s.

In the 1950s, the 507 became BMW’s flagship sports car, and at the time, the most expensive to ever be produced by the Bavarian firm. The extensive cost and craftsmanship kept the production number low, thus only 253 models were made. This one of 253 examples has appealed to celebrities and car aficionados over the decades, including Elvis Presley, and the Aga Khan.

This 507 features key BMW sports car elements, including the 3.2 liter, all-aluminium V8 150 horsepower engine, cutting down the weight of the vehicle to 1,280kg. Intended for high performance with 150bhp at 5,000 rpm, the sports car is capable of approximately 125 mph, with 62 mph coming up in 11 seconds. This 1959 Roadster also boasts a four-speed ZF manual transmission, independent front suspensions with a live rear axle, and four-wheel hydraulic aluminum drum brakes.

Aficionados can expect much of the car’s originality intact and in excellent condition. Original components include the interior, the Behr radiator and many of the Bosch and Knecht ancillaries. A very rare and original Becker Mexico radio is fitted in the dash, adding a one-of-a-kind addition to an already out of the ordinary automotive.

The 1959 BMW 507 Series II Roadster is available for bidding at Bonhams. The Bonhams Scottsdale Auction is set to open on January 21, 2021, 1:00 p.m. MST.
