[Updated] The ID.R is Going for the Overall HillClimb Record at Goodwood Today

[update: The ID.R has done it setting a 41.18 in the hill climb course, but they’ll continue to try to set an even better time during the shootout later this weekend]

Volkswagen has determined that its Pikes Peak and Nurburgring-shredding EV, the ID.R will take another record today. And it’s not the first time they’ve tried, so this time… it’s personal.

The ID.R is set to take on the Hill Climb at the Goodwood Festival of Speed today and Volkswagen is determined to get it up the hill in less than 41.6 seconds.

That overall record was set in 1999 by Nick Heidfeld in his McLaren Mercedes F1 car. Heidfeld has said that it was his first run at full chat and it was terrifying. At no point does it look like the car was settled and/or fully in control.

As mentioned above, though, this isn’t the ID.R’s first run up Lord March’s driveway. Last year, Romain Dumas, fresh from smashing the overall record at Pike’s Peak, got up the hill climb in 45.6 seconds.

The car’s chances of beating the F1 record are considerably better this year because the car is set up to be at sea level, instead of at the top of a mountain. Fresh from its electric Nurburgring record, the ID.R’s aero kit will be better set up for today’s run.
