Acura Added to LMDh Class List for 2023 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship

The growing Le Mans Daytona hybrid class in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship added another member, as Acura announced on Tuesday that it would joining the class.

In a brief press release, “Acura Motorsports today confirmed it will continue to compete in the top category of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship in 2023 under the new Le Mans Daytona hybrid (LMDh) format.”

An Acura spokesperson said that more information about Acura’s entry in the class will be revealed “later this year.”

Acura joins Porsche and Audi as manufacturers committing to the new hybrid class of racing. Cars in the LMDh class will be able to race in both the World Endurance Championship and the top class of the IMSA WeatherTech Series. The cars will also be able to race in the Le Mans 24 Hours.

Acura, meanwhile is focused on the IMSA WeatherTech series for another reason this weekend, as it has two DPi teams—Meyer Shank Racing and Wayne Taylor Racing—this weekend at the Rolex 24 at Daytona.

“All of us at IMSA are so excited about the response to the concept of LMDh and global convergence,” said IMSA president John Doonan. “Given the commitments already announced, and the number of auto manufacturers that continue to study LMDh as a marketing and technology platform, there is a tremendous amount of momentum for the future of our sport. Our loyal fans worldwide are in for a real treat.

“Acura has an outstanding record of success in prototype racing, which I experienced as a race fan from a young age and as a competitor in recent years. On behalf of IMSA, I am proud to continue working with Acura as we work collectively to continue building our sport.”
