Romain Grosjean confirms IndyCar 'discussions' | F1 News by PlanetF1

Romain Grosjean has said he is in “discussions” over joining the IndyCar Series, but factors like racing on ovals “complicate” them.

The Frenchman was informed by Haas that his contract wouldn’t be extended beyond 2020, but sadly his career with the team ended two races earlier than planned following a horrifying crash at the Bahrain Grand Prix.

Thankfully Grosjean is well on his way to recovery, with all bandages now off his hands following the burns he suffered in the crash, in particular to his left hand which also required surgery on a torn tendon.

And Grosjean said that he wants to continue racing, confirming talks with IndyCar after reports recently suggested that he was close to a deal with the Dale Coyne Racing team.

A fear of ovals though has previously made Grosjean wary on competing in IndyCar, and he said that is one of the factors he is taking into consideration with discussions ongoing.

“It’s a nice championship, with good drivers. Is it a championship that I’m watching closely, yes,” said Grosjean in an interview with Ouest-France.

“Is it done, or close to being done, it’s still hard to say. Indeed, there are the races on ovals. Technically, it’s complicated. I talk about it with my family and friends too.

“We are in discussion, we look at it, we work on all that. But if it is done, so much the better, if not, we will do something else. We don’t put any stress on it.”

That something else could well be the 24 Hours of Le Mans, with Grosjean saying that is definitely a challenge he wants to tackle again after first taking part in 2010.

“Clearly, it’s one of the things I want to do,” he said.

“This year, that said, we’re still between two regulations. Toyota presented its car, which is very pretty. We know that other manufacturers want to come back by 2023.

“Yes, it’s something that really tempts me, to share the car with teammates.

“In F1, the objective was to go as fast as possible, alone. Today, I’m really excited about the idea of making everyone go fast.

“I’ve already had the chance to do it in real life, but also more recently in virtual, with my e-sport team. I really want to do something like that again.”
